A Slice of a Mom

2024-05-10

When I first entered foster care/State custody, I cried for my mother nearly every night for years. I later learned that for a child, it's "like a death that you never had a funeral for". That "death" brought a lot of subsitute parents into my life, all with that nuturing spirit that seems to come naturally.

Of course it was never perfect. And we all met extreme challenges along the way. But having spent the rest of my formative years in some form of foster or State custody, it was those mothers that made space for me to grow and thrive.

Though I have never actually called anyone "mom", I am grateful to have had a slice of a "mom".

Thank you to my "moms" and Happy Mother's Day.
